National Day of Prayer: Unity

Guest blog by American Legion Auxiliary 2017-2018 National Chaplain Evelyn Espinola

National Day of Prayer May 3

The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was unanimously amended by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on May 5, 1988, designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer. Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.

National Day of Prayer calls on all people of different faiths in the United States to pray for the nation and its leaders. God’s word says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). The Bible tells us we should repent of our sins and return to almighty God. We should be confident in our beliefs that we honestly serve a God of mercy and compassion, and know that He stands ready to respond to our prayers.

As an organization that stands in unity for our veterans, family, and each other, we should humble ourselves and unify together in prayer for the next move of God, that He will prevail for America.

Prayer is among the most important gifts we receive as children of God. We can come together and be united in prayer that America will once again receive the message of God.

My prayer for America and this great nation is…

My Heavenly Father,

On this day of unity, let us come together in prayer for the uncertainties of our nation. We ask You, Lord, to walk once again among us. Touch the hearts of our nation and its leaders. Give them the wisdom to know what is right and the courage to do it. Lay Your hands upon Your children that they may once again turn to You for peace and guidance. Remind them You are still with them. Let us remember the men and women who are far from their families as they risk their lives for our country. Hold their families close. We give thanks for those who have served and for those who have given their lives for our country. Surround this nation with Your mighty angels, cover it with Your grace, and protect it in Your mercy. May the nation look to You for the strength and peace that only You can give.

In all this, I pray in Your heavenly name. Amen.
